Real Foods Market & Cafe : The Natural Choice : October 2006

October 3, 2006 09:36 - Inspirational and Uplifting Movies?

Wow.

In the midst of Die Hard 137 and Friday the 13th Chapter 56, a young cinema distribution company has sprouted. And it ONLY deals with spiritual, inspiring, and uplifting movies.

It's a sort of movie club.

If you enjoyed What the Bleep and Indigo, you may want to get in on this.

Like NetFlix, there is a monthly fee, and the movies come in the mail.

UNLIKE NetFlix (or other movie services), you don't need to return the movies. They're not rentals; you own the DVD, and can view (or share) it whenever you like.

The only catch I can find is that you don't get to pick the features. They arrive (4 per month) in your mailbox; everybody gets the same movies.

But here's the deal: most of these movies will never see a theater. They have been shown at film festivals like Sundance (many have won awards), but how many of us get to attend those events?

Many of these DVDs are not feature-length films; a lot are considered "shorts" - from 30 minutes to an hour long.
So it may not be an entire evening's entertainment.

But I see it as a Win-Win.

You get exposed to a higher-frequency sort of entertainment, AND the artists that make this sort of feature get some financial support that they probably wouldn't have received otherwise.

October 8, 2006 01:06 - Biosonic Healing Classes with Tibetan Singing Bowls

I recently met a Tibetan Bowl Master - Kenny Parker of Austin. I haven't had the pleasure of hearing/seeing one of his live performances yet, but his CD is great.

In addition to concerts, space clearing, and healing sessions, my new friend also teaches people how to properly use these ancient sacred instruments.

And there's a class coming up (tell him Sherri sent you).

In this one-day intensive training, you will experience why Tibetan Singing Bowls are one of the best harmonic instruments for use in the practice of Sacred Sound Healing.

These bowls are one of the very few instruments on the planet created expressly for the purpose of vibrational healing and ceremony.

In this class, you will explore:

  • Sound Healing Theory and the history of the Tibetan Singing Bowls

  • Musical Nature of the Universe

  • Why Sound Healing Works

  • Hands-on technique and practice in playing bowls, bells and tingshaws

  • Bowl layouts (on and off the body)

  • How to integrate Sound Healing with other therapeutic modalities

  • Special uses and placements

  • Great compliment for any therapy.

No previous experience necessary; being a practitioner is not a pre-requisite for this training.

Next class: Saturday, October 28, 2006

    12:30pm - 5:30 pm

    Cost: $85.00

Location: ZAZ Studio, 110 Pinion Dr., Wimberley, Texas 78676

    October 16, 2006 01:57 - The Power of Belief

Don't we all want to be successful? In life? As a person? In your career, job, business?

The fundamental law of human achievement is the law of belief. It suggests that you always behave in a manner consistent with your beliefs.

If you believe you are an Episcopalian, then you are. If you believe you are a Buddhist, you are. If you believe you can ride a bicycle, then you can ride a bicycle.

Even if you can't ride a bicycle, as long as you believe you can, you'll probably do fine. But if not, then you will persist in failing until you can actually ride.

Unfortunately, once you decide you can't do something, then you absolutely can't. You then suffer from the self-limiting belief that you just cannot do it.

Your belief is not based on fact; it is simply a belief

Even though our self-limiting beliefs are not based on fact, we still behave in a manner consistent with our beliefs.

If you believe you can drive a car, be creative, set goals, implement a successful life strategy or marketing strategy, sell well, negotiate, be a leader, understand the financial implications, manage your time well, etc., then you can master all these skills.

Even if at the present time you have not mastered these skills, as long as you believe you are excellent, then you will make the necessary efforts. You will set goals, design a personal development plan, and set personal and family goals and resolve to pay the necessary price.

Another really important aspect of the law of belief is that you can believe anything that you want to believe (we live in a Free Will Zone).

You can believe that you are brilliant at marketing, selling, finance, relationships and time management. You can believe that you are successful in business. You can believe that you are a millionaire.

As long as you truly believe, then you will hang on to that belief - despite setbacks - until your beliefs become your reality. Without a doubt, your beliefs are your reality.

Make a decision to adopt beliefs which are consistent with achieving your goals.

All successful people have beliefs consistent with what they want to achieve. Join them! Make a decision to change your beliefs.

The beliefs you hold at the moment are largely responsible for the position you hold at the moment. If you change your beliefs, then you change your reality.

Changing your beliefs about yourself means changing your self-concept

Your self-concept is your bundle of beliefs about yourself. Make a decision to adopt the self-concept which is consistent with achieving your goals.

We get our beliefs from our culture and from things other people tell us.

When we are young, our most significant others tell us things which describe us. If the parent tells the child he is useless he will grow up believing it and manifesting that uselessness in his life. If the daughter was told she is beautiful and sings like an angel, she will grow up believing it whether it is true or not.

Everything starts with ideas or thoughts.

Thoughts and ideas become feelings which eventually become beliefs.

Your beliefs have a powerful effect on your expectations.

Your expectations have a powerful effect on your attitude.

If you believe you are destined to become successful then this has a strong effect on your expectations which in turn become very positive. Your positive expectations are translated into a very positive attitude. Your attitude is the major determinant of your success in achieving your goals.

    Everything comes back to beliefs

Successful people have the beliefs of successful people; unsuccessful people have the beliefs of unsuccessful people. Make a decision to adopt the belief that you are successful.

Make a decision to shake off self-limiting beliefs and negative emotions. This drains energy and is time wasting.

Replace them with positive beliefs and positive emotions. Start now!

Create your Reality. And believe in yourself! (Go check it out)

October 19, 2006 22:16 - Rice Industry: Keep Genetically Engineered Varieties in the Lab

The US rice industry can take a lesson from Hawaiian coffee growers.

In 2004, the University of Hawaii and others were getting dangerously close to conducting outdoor trials of genetically modified (GM) coffee—plants whose DNA had been artificially inserted with genes from other species. Growers throughout the state knew if their premium coffee became contaminated with GM varieties, it would threaten their markets.

The growers rejected claims that small buffer zones around GM fields would protect them. Bees carry pollen for miles. GM crops can get mixed up by human error. And everyone on the islands knows that seeds naturally travel. (Consider Hawaii’s conversion from lava rock to a lush paradise.)

They extracted a promise from the University to discontinue studies that could lead to outdoor GM coffee trials, saving their farms from contamination.

Not so for the rice industry, which just saw world markets close and prices plummet after unapproved GM rice escaped from field trials, contaminating US stocks. Japan stopped buying long grain US rice, products were taken off shelves in Europe and the industry may lose $150 million or more.

Amid the lawsuits and rejected shipments, the rice industry must now decide whether to belatedly follow the coffee growers’ example. They can tell the government and five multinational GM crop companies, "No more GM rice trials!" Or they can continue to risk costly episodes of contamination.

And for what? To share the fate of soybean and corn growers?

In 1996, biotech companies introduced GM soy and corn varieties that could either withstand herbicide or produce pesticides in every cell. Although the new technology was largely hidden from American shoppers, the European press did extensive coverage and consumers there were not pleased.

In a single week in April 1999, food companies throughout the continent responded by vowing to remove GM ingredients from their European brands. Japanese companies followed suit and American agriculture has yet to recover.

The corn industry lost their $300 million European market; US soy sales also plunged. The government poured an extra $2-3 billion per year in price support subsidies. And many non-GM growers were forced to pay for costly segregation programs just to keep their customers.

The promise of higher yields, lower chemical use and weed-free living through GM crops turned into slightly lower average yields, significantly higher herbicide use and the emergence of superweeds that resist weed killer.

Many who were once enthusiastic about GM technology are saying "Come back in 50 to 100 years when you’ve done your homework."

The Biotech PR firms want the rice industry and others to believe that gene inserted crops are catching on around the world.

In reality, studies show that the more people learn about GM food, the less they want to put it in their mouth.

The main reason why most US consumers are complacent is that they don’t know about the issue. Sixty percent say they have never eaten a GM food in their lives. In truth, most eat it everyday, usually in the form of soy and corn derivatives in processed foods.

When Americans find out that they have been eating GM ingredients, they usually assume that the FDA has tested it and proven it safe.

    Not true.

Documents made public from a lawsuit revealed that FDA scientists had repeatedly warned their superiors that GM foods might create unpredictable, hard-to-detect allergies, toxins, new diseases and nutritional problems. They urged political appointees to require long-term safety studies.

But the person in charge of FDA policy was the former attorney (and later vice president) of biotech giant Monsanto. And the agency was under orders from the White House to promote GM crops.

The policy that was adopted in 1992, and still stands, is that no safety tests whatsoever are required by the FDA. Thus, varieties that had never been rigorously safety tested with animals, and probably never even fed to humans, were approved for sale.

Evidence of adverse reactions is mounting.

From the tiny number of safety studies that have been conducted, animals treated with GM crops show stunted growth, impaired immune systems, bleeding stomachs, potentially precancerous cell growth, damaged and misshapen cells, inflamed kidneys, smaller brains and testicles, enlarged intestines, reduced digestive enzymes, higher blood sugar, inflamed lung tissue, increased death rates and higher offspring mortality, to name a few.

Reports from the field are less encouraging.

  • Two dozen US farmers say that sterility in pigs or cows is related to GM corn varieties.

  • Seventy-one Indian shepherds report that 25% of their sheep died from grazing on GM cotton plants.

  • Filipinos in at least 5 villages fell sick when nearby GM corn was pollinating.

  • And hundreds of laborers in India developed allergic reactions after handling GM cotton.

  • Soy allergies skyrocketed by 50% in the UK soon after GM soy was introduced.

  • And in the 1980s, a GM food supplement killed about 100 Americans and caused sickness and disability in another 5,000-10,000.
  • If this information makes you uneasy, consider what will happen when millions of US consumers learn that high-risk GM foods are in their baby’s formula and kids’ breakfast cereal.

The reaction may force US food manufacturers to repeat the vows of their European counterparts. The corn and soy growers would surely be hit even harder than before.

How will the rice industry fare? That depends on what they choose now.

But the choice is not just with rice growers. What about those who deal in lettuce, barley, sunflowers and plums?
Most vegetables, fruits and grains have GM counterparts in some stage of development. And behind that variety stands a biotech company, more than willing to grow it in field trials and risk the food industry’s markets.

Even the US wheat growers remain in danger. They had forced Monsanto to abandon plans to introduce GM wheat in May 2004, but unlike Hawaii’s coffee growers, they can still be contaminated from outdoor field trials.

It is time that US producers take charge and say to the biotech industry, "You can grow your GM crops only when we are ready to take that risk. Until then, keep it in the lab."

October 27, 2006 07:28 - Is Chicken Soup Hazardous to Your Health?

Chicken soup is one of the first things you think of when you want to get well.

But can it also do harm?

Even though they don't want people to stop eating chicken and turkey, some medical researchers think that eating drug-treated poultry could cause antibiotic resistance in humans (in pets, too, I suppose, though it wasn’t mentioned).

Just like medical doctors sometimes use pharmaceutical drugs "off-label" - that is, for some purpose other than the one the drug is supposed to be for - "factory farmers" use antibiotics to help their livestock grow faster. This quicker growth saves the farmer money because their animals reach slaughter weight sooner.

This is different from using antibiotics to make a sick or infected animal well; it is putting pharmaceutical drugs into the food supply simply for profit. And now that I think about it, who even wants to eat a sick or infected animal at all?

The big problem is that antibiotics are used so often that the germs are "learning" how to mutate to resist the antibiotics that are supposed do them in.

What this means for you and me is that antibiotics aren't working like they once did. And if you have a serious infection, you want your prescription to work quickly ... and well.

So if you're getting a constant trickle of antibiotic drugs in your diet - by eating meat, poultry, eggs, milk, cheese, and even farm-raised fish - you may be setting yourself up for future problems.

Do yourself (and the rest of us) a favor. Avoid drug resistance:

  • Try to keep from eating meat and animal products that contain antibiotics and other drugs; grow your own or get it from someone you trust. Farm markets and natural food stores are an obvious source. Even your neighbor may have fresh eggs or a side of beef to sell.

  • Take antibiotics (and give them to your animal friends) only when necessary.

  • If you and your doctor decide you need antibiotics, TAKE THE ENTIRE PRESCRIPTION! Don't stop them after a few days just because you're feeling better. Your doctor went to school for a long time to learn this stuff - a certain number of pills were prescribed for a reason (on the other hand, if you experience side effects, tell your doctor).
  • Eating healthy food makes it much easier to stay healthier yourself. You know what they say about an apple a day...
