A Great and Valuable Read

A week ago, while I was waiting for the creek to go down so I could get home (!!), I read a fanastic book (I was there in front of the Arnosky barn for 3 hours). You've probably seen Suze Orman on PBS- she's the gal who talks about money and Concsiousness. She teaches that your relationship with money is just like any other relationship.

Not only was it great information, Suze has worked a fantastic deal with Ameritrade (for women only; sorry guys) to help you set up a retirement account.

Women & Money: Owning the Power to Control Your Destiny

I went back and got another one for my daughter.

More

And while we're on books and money, Real Foods is offering (at no cost) the book that was the inspiration for "The Secret" in the form of an eBook. It's downloaded as a PDF file, so you need a PDF reader to open it. (If you're on dial-up, you might want to open a new browser window for the download so you can continue reading.)

You probably already have Adobe Reader on your computer, but if you don't, you can get it here (once again, no charge):

This week's Healthy Shopper article :

Garlic: Scourge of Vampires, Bane of Bugs

By James J.Gormley

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 22 million school days are lost annually in the United States due to the common cold. In fact, in the course of a year, people in the US suffer 1 billion colds, according to some estimates.

More than 200 different viruses are known to cause the symptoms of the common cold. Some, such as the rhinoviruses, seldom produce serious illnesses. Others, such as parainfluenza and respiratory syncytial virus, produce mild infections in adults, but can precipitate severe lower respiratory infections in young children.

The CDC estimates that 5 to 20 percent of Americans come down with the flu during each flu season, which typically lasts from November to March. Children are two to three times more likely than are adults to get sick with the flu, and children frequently spread the virus to others.

Although most people recover from the illness, the CDC also estimates that in the US more than 200,000 people are hospitalized and about 36,000 people die from the flu and its complications every year.

With colds in mind, I once called Dr. James Duke to ask him a question about a journal article on garlic and cancer. He asked me to hold on since he had a pot of garlic soup on the oven and didn't want it to burn! "If I were stranded on a desert isle, I'd rather have garlic than almost any other herb," Duke said. "It'll boost your immune system and fight the nasties better than anything I can think of."

Garlic-available in organic bulbs, and in supplements and tablet forms-is not only a cold bug buster but is also a versatile health-promoter.

In 2006, aged garlic extract (AGE) supplements were shown to:

- improve blood pressure (Harauma & Moriguchi);
- assist in detoxification (Greenblatt et al.);
- reduce senile dementia and heart disease risk (Borek);
- help with Alzheimer's disease (Chauhan);
- improve natural killer (NK) cell activity inpatients with advanced digestive cancer (Ishikawa et al.);
- reduce colorectal cancer incidence and growth {Tanaka et al.; Matsuura et al.};
- hold back precancerous activity (Uda et al.; You et al.);
- protect against toxic effects of cancer chemotherapy (Horie et al.; Katsuki et al.; Yuncu et al.);
- and reduce fatigue (Morihara et al.).

Non-aged garlic powder-based supplements were found to: protect cells (Singh et al.) and prevent cardiovascular conditions that lead to stroke (Fukao et aI., 2007).

Whether garlic's fabled anti-vampire powers are true or not, it's reassuring to know that its health-promoting benefits are indisputable.

The Blanco Film Society is Back

After taking a respite, we will be up and running again beginning Friday, April 13th (special night).

The Film Society was formerly afilliated with the BISD Community Learning Center; our non-profit status was under their "umbrella." We are now in the process of obtaining our separate 501(c)3 status, so that we can be self-governing.

As part of our transition, the Blanco Film Society has purchased a license for public performance to be donated to the Blanco Library. This will allow us to (legally) show movies each week; also, the library will be able to expand their children's programs to include educational films.

In honor of our new partnership, the Film Society will "kick off" our film season with a fundraiser for the library.

You will be able to enjoy an amazing Tuscan-style dinner at the Old Blanco Courthouse (on the Blanco Square). After the feast, we'll gather at the library's new "movie theater" for Tea with Mussolini.

A membership fee of only $20 entitles your household to free admission to as many movies as you care to attend for the next year. Or if your not a "joiner," come anyway, and toss a dollar or two in the basket as a donation.

You'll have have an opportunity to join the Blanco Film Society at the library fundraiser, or you can mail your check or money order (payable to "Blanco Film Society") along with your membership application (Please visit our website at http://www.BlancoFilmSociety.org), to:

Blanco Film Society
PO Box 489
Blanco TX 78606

Then, join us at the Blanco Library on Saturday evenings at 7:30. We'll have soft drinks, water, and snacks available for that movie theater experience - minus the sticky floor!
