BMI Calculator
(Body Mass Index)

A BMI calculator will help you to figure out if your weight is proportionate to your height. But it should only be used as a guideline.

[Thanks to Savvy Fat-Burning Food for providing this online calculator]

Feet to Inches Conversion

1 foot = 12 inches.

Example: 5'4' equals 64 inches

5 x 12 + 4 = 64 inches in height.

Imperial and Metric BMI Equations

The formula for calculating BMI in imperial measurements as follows below:

Weight in Pounds / Height in Inches x Height in Inches x 703

If you would like to calculate your body mass index in metric values use the following equation:

Weight in Kilograms

Height in Meters x Height in Meters

The body mass index is not always accurate in measuring actual levels of fitness and health. Other issues should be taken into account.

A really thin person can have almost no muscle mass and be very unfit; while a well-muscled, body-builder will register as overweight by the above table, and be very physically fit.

Professionals now recognize that indicators such as the amount of abdominal fat need to be taken into account when considering the overall health of an individual (remember the old "pinch an inch"?).

Also remember that a person can look "average-fit" and have low bone density. This will also skew the results.

Again, a BMI calculator is only useful up to a point. Consult your health care practitioner for other ways of measuring body fat.
